The End of a Generation of Artists

I’ve seen it a few times before in the fashion industry… it starts with a company on the verge who makes a deal with another company, most of the time a larger more powerful company, and when one of the companies fails to live up to the deal, one of the companies goes under. In this case I’m talking about Gen Art and Rock Fashion Week. If you we’re involved in LA Fashion Week Spring09 – you witnessed the destruction first hand.

And so in the end I received this letter announcing the end of Gen Art:

Dear Gen Art Supporter,

It is with an extremely heavy heart that we are contacting you.

After struggling for the past 18 months since the economic crisis, Gen Art has finally succumbed to the recession.

During this challenging time we did everything in our power to adjust our business to these new business realities by cutting costs and seeking out alternative funding solutions. However when a major, new, corporate partnership unexpectedly collapsed a few weeks ago, we found ourselves without sufficient resources or time to overcome this sudden and substantial loss of revenue. The reality is that we had fiscally planned and relied upon the representations of this partner. Their decision had the unintended effect of pushing Gen Art over the edge. As of today we have halted all operations.

We will be forever grateful for the support of so many individuals and corporate partners over the last 16 years who have believed in the vision and mission of this business. Whatever we have accomplished has been made possible through the hard work and dedication of the incredible Gen Art staff, interns and legions of volunteers who have given so much of themselves, their passion and their talents to the common causes of discovering and showcasing the new generation of talent.

It has been an incredible journey and experience. We will always remember the good times and proudly think back on the opportunities created for so many emerging artists through the thousands of fashion shows, film screenings and festivals, live music performance, art fairs and competitions we have produced across the country since 1994.

We hope that where we have left off, others will step up to help fill the void.

Sincerely,
Ian & Stefan Gerard

Fashion From Downtown to the Hills

Breaking News: BHFW to launch Spring 2011

bevhillfw

Launching Next Season: You heard it hear first

NEXT season Downtown LA Fashion Week is cleaning up and moving on to the Hills of Beverly – Welcome to Beverly Hills Fashion Week! In most major cities the high end fashion retailers are just down the street form the runways that they walk. New York has 5th Ave and San Fransisco has Union Square and the list goes on… Except for Los Angeles where downtown is far away from Rodeo Dr, so from that point of view, Beverly Hills Fashion Week just makes sense.

For the inaugural season BHFW (now moved to Spring 2011) it will be a tented show (another staple of the big cities) in the parking lot across from the Beverly Hilton Hotel. It has everything right there, hotel, parking, restaurants, and shopping. (And none of the congestion, smog, homelessness, and food carts… who needs that stuff anyway?)

As for this season Fall 2010, please go to our events page to see what else is cooking so you can get your fashion fix!

LookBookLA will keep you updated as soon as  more details are announced.

If High School Halls Could Talk

Straight From the Source’s Mouth… (Fashion Week Edition)

* Fashion Designer, Linda Wong, source of The Battalion

In high school, I knew I was a riot grrrl when I wore my bright blue faux fur hot pants, thrifted Vegas-gift-shop tank, homemade spike choker, with my 20 hole Docs, and when I wore it, my theme song was “Alien She” by Bikini Kill.

Thanks Linda!

* Fashion Designer, Nicholas, source of NCL Couture

In high school, I knew I was killer fantastic when I wore my black capris, pink Ralph Lauren dress shirt, black vest and a tie, and when I wore it my theme song was “What A Girl Wants” by Christina Aguilera.

Thanks Nicholas!

In high school, I knew I was brand junkie when I wore my powder blue Miu Miu pumps to match my navy blue Hillcrest Christian School uniform, and when I wore it my theme song was “Strutter” by KISS .

Thanks Jen!

“Sterling7″ Interview: ENZE

enze_001enze_003enze_004enze_005

The clever names given to the pieces in the ENZE Fall/Winter 2009 Collection, designed by Meryem Fares, coupled with the use of sleek geometrical detail got me very excited about Men’s Wear. And ENZE’s Spring 2010 Collection brings the very touchable textiles that we all desire to wear into very wearable appeal.

Desiring to delve further into his creativity, I presented Meryem with my “Sterling7”, and here’s his reverberation

Judi: At what moment did you know you were a Fashion Designer?

Meryem: I knew I was really into fashion when I was around 8 years old. I remember sketching and making patterns for the pink Cinderella dress I HAD TO HAVE!!! That was right around the time when my mom also noticed. She decided to leave me with her seamstress friend for weekends so that I could start learning…and she was the only one who really inspired me to continue in my later years.

Judi: How long have you been designing?

Meryem: I have been designing since high school, but in the professional capacity, for the past 6 years.

Judi: What inspires/influences you, in any way?

Meryem: Pretty much everything inspires me; art, antiques, a trip to the museum, great music, street scenes, people, great cities, great movies and great photography…

Judi: Who wears ENZE?

Meryem: A man who is confident, adventurous, bold and never has to explain himself.

Judi: What does ENZE “feel” like?

Meryem: Smooth

Judi: Choose one and tell why: Men At Work, Men Without Hats, or Devo?

Meryem: Men Without Hats. Just because, “We can dance if we want to…” is the whole point in life!

Judi’s Choice: Devo. Men At Work made Australia and vegemite cool , andMen Without Hats’ “Safety Dance” is one of my all time favorites, but Devo was a movement! I know you’re picturing those red flowerpot hats as I speak. Devo gave us a new style, a new way to view life! I thank them for that.

Judi: What is your self inspired fashion quote for the world?

Meryem: Wear what you look good in and ALWAYS look good!
