October 13, 2009 to October 15, 2009

DTLAFW – TEASER from Ryan Isbell Productions on Vimeo.

This is the most up to date information for Downtown LA Fashion Week. The story below is more current then the flyer so read carefully. As I receive individual invites for each event during the three day event I’ll post the invite on the day and time that they are scheduled.

Downtown Los Angeles Fashion Week (DLAFW) is back for three days featuring Louver by Louis Verdad, runway shows by SKINGRAFT, Le Chapeau Designs by ALAKAZIA, (Jessica Svoboda has postponed until next season) Custo Barcelona, Oliver Tolentino, The Battalion – eco-conscious couture, and Elizabeth Mason – The Paper Bag Princess who will Celebrate Valentino, The Last Emperor, with a collection of his vintage gowns.

August Bradley has been invited to display a series of large scale fashion photographs taken specifically for DLAFW. The exclusive unveiling on October 13th, 2009 coincides with a special presentation and welcome by Mayor Villaraigosa. The designers featured are Elizabeth Mason, Lloyd Klein, Oliver Tolentino, Oscar O Lima, Kevan Hall, Yotam Solomon, Camilla and Marc, David Alexander, and more with jewelry by Avant Garde, and shoes from Diavolina. See our news page for more details.

DLAFW is also doing a series of presentations along with meet and greets with designers, Michel Berandi, Julia y Renata, Eduardo Lucero, Yotom Soloman, and Elizabeth Mason. (The Uniform Project is no longer showing and a replacement will be announced soon.)

DLAFW has just announced the winners of the Fashion Angels Awards granted by the City of Los Angeles and The Department of Cultural Affairs which will also show their collections on the runway. They are Jacquetta O’dell and Krysta Henry, Phong Hong, and Fernanda Carneiro. (Don’t tell the Mayor.)

DLAFW is also hosting a runway segment called MODE Israel with a line up of designers featuring Alembika, Bracha Baron, Kedem Sasson, Keren Naftali, Sugar Daddy, Yosef Peretz and an Emerging Designer Presentation from the students of Shenkar College of Engineering and Design. This show also features a performance by Israeli electro-pop-dance band Terry Poison.

See the image above for details, days, and times. Industry are invited to attend. For registration, tickets and more info go to Downtown Los Angeles Fashion Week.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa presided over a press conference at the California Market Center to speak about LA Fashion Week. He spoke about the industry from the business end and mentioned the jobs, the investments, and the amount of money bought into downtown LA every year. The mayor then went on to speak at length about Rock Fashion Week which is not based in LA. This seemed to be a disconnect while Leanna Lewis form Downtown LA Fashion Week, Mikey Koffman from LA Fashion Weekend, and several other LA based designers looked on.

Randolph Duke announced the winners of the Fashion Angels Awards, The Los Angeles Emerging Designer Competition presented by the The City of LA, the Department of Cultural Affairs, and Downtown LA Fashion Week where they will be showing their collections on the runway. The winners pictured above each with a model wearing their designs are Jacquetta O’dell and Krysta Henry, Phong Hong, and Fernanda Carneiro with Leanna Lewis in the middle. Some of the esteemed judges pictured above are Yotam Solomon, Nick Verreos, Louis Verdad, Vanessa Gonzalez, Randolph Duke, and Raymond Baltazar.

Designer Max Azria, Ilse Metchek, executive director of the California Fashion Association (CFA), and Cynthia Ruiz, fashion ambassador for the Mayor’s office, also spoke.

Following the press conference Mayor Villaraigosa, along with his staff, representatives from the CMC, and a few photographers, were invited on a tour of some of the showrooms. At the YMI temporary space he met with David Vered, President of YMI Jeanswear, and discussed the “City of Angels” collection. We then went up to the In Play Showroom, where the Mayor remarked that the clothes were so cute, they made him want to have a child. The third stop was the Liza Stewart showroom where collections from Maria Bianca Nero, and Sworn Virgins were viewed. The Mayor mentioned how great his girlfriend would look in a white dress by Maria Bianca Nero. The last stop was the BCBG Max Azria Group showroom. At each stop the Mayor discussed the importance of clothing designed and manufactured in Los Angeles and careful attention was given to those brands.
